Marans Hen

Only available in November

Also known as the chicken that lays golden eggs.

Once a year we sell roasting cocks from our Maran breeding which are kept in the free range for about 200 days and soup chickens from the 2-year-old laying hens.

The offer is limited, as we only keep a limited number of animals. All our animals are free-range and are fed with our grains from old wheat varieties and with bran from our milling process.

Description

Origin of the Marans:

The breed originated in the early 20th century from local populations in Poitou-Charentes in France. To our great delight, this breed with its dark brown eggs has left the Poitou-Charentes region and has enjoyed increasing popularity since 1995.

The breed is mainly found in Basse-Normandie and in Brittany. It is an ideal, very hardy, multi-purpose chicken that is well suited for egg production and meat production. The breed is also found in other countries, Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, Canada and Switzerland.

There are 6 colourings of Maran hens: black/copper (this is the most common colouring with over 50% of the birds), silver sparrow, wheat, white, Columbia and black silver.

An ideal chicken for the family or the small farm:

A dual-purpose chicken, eggs and meat, the Marans hen is mainly used to produce its rust-red eggs. This egg colour is unique and only found in the Marans hen.
By selection for egg production, the hens lay 170-180 eggs per year in free-range conditions. The breed adapts easily to any climate, and as a free-range chicken is outdoors in all weathers.
